About the Conference
Each fall, Memorial Union student employees will have an opportunity to attend a regional conference hosted by the Association of College Unions International, or ACUI. UND is a member of Region 10, which consists of schools in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Canada. The Region 10 web site is at http://region10.acui.org
The regional conference is held at a different Union each year. This gives us an opportunity to visit different Unions, meet student employees and staff from other Unions, and participate in a variety of educational sessions. We also have a lot of time to bond together as a team, by attending banquets, luncheons, and participating in networking activities.
Up-coming schedule:
2009 University of Northern Iowa
2010 Mankato
2011 University of North Dakota (we will host)
What will I learn by attending?
Student employees who attend the annual ACUI Region 10 conference will be able to describe:
- At least one new technique or knowledge item they learned that could help them improve their supervisory or leadership skills.
- At least one new technique or knowledge item they learned that they might apply to their personal life and how they could benefit from it.
- At least one or two new ideas they learned that could be applied to their particular service area or the Memorial Union (as a whole) and how the Union (or those we serve) could benefit from it.
Those who attend will be asked to write a reflection paper answering these questions, which will be submitted to the Director after their return from the conference.
Conference Reflection Assignment
What should I expect, if I want to go?
Besides the learning activity (writing the reflective paper), everyone will travel together in University vehicles and stay together in the same motel. Students will also share rooms.
Normally, we will leave the Memorial Union early Thursday morning and arrive at the conference on Thursday afternoon (depending on where the conference is held). The conference starts Thursday evening and ends Saturday afternoon. We will travel back to UND as soon as the conference is over, arriving back at the Union late Saturday evening. Travel times are always determined by how far we have to drive.
How can I attend?
The Memorial Union has sent between 6-10 students to the conference each year. This depends on such factors as class schedules and available funding. The Memorial Union staff will establish an application and selection process to help identify who will go. As a result, your job performance and a recommendation from your supervisor will be important.
For more information, ask your supervisor or see the Memorial Union Director.
