These guidelines have been reviewed August 1, 2008 and supplement the Code of Student Life, Section 5: Use of University Facilities, for the 2008-2009 school year.
Persons or groups orchestrating a petition drive will comply with Section 5-3 of the Code of Student Life .
When approved, petitioners may gather signatures. The use for which the signatures are being solicited is to be clearly defined and conspicuously displayed.
Disturbing or interfering with regular academic or institutional programs; impeding the free flow of pedestrians or with vehicular traffic; acts of harassment, embarrassment, and/or intimidation of a person being requested to sign, or petitioning that is deceptive as to purpose in any way is cause for revocation of the Special Activities permit.
Petitioners will not set up tables as to block entrances/exits to the building. This includes directly under the canopy over the front (north) entrance. Entrances/exits must remain clear of obstructions in the event of a building evacuation due to emergency conditions. Tables are permitted on sidewalks as long as they do not interfere with pedestrian traffic. The Memorial Union does not supply tables or chairs outdoors for petitioners.
Petitioners may reserve first floor table space inside the Memorial Union for the purpose of gathering signatures. Only tables in designated areas may be used. Petitioners may not bring their own table(s) into the building. Use of tables on floors other than the first floor must be approved and coordinated with the Administrative office.
If the Memorial Union staff observes or receives reports that petitioners are not complying with these guidelines, the staff will (1) make the petitioner aware of their behavior, and (2) advise them that if the behavior continues, the incident will be reported to the University Police Department.
